The ancient art of tree pruning dates back a very long time, in fact there is mention of tree pruning even in the Bible. People have long known that when you shape a tree, remove bulk and allow air and light to enter that the result is a tree that has healthier, and very often larger fruits. This realization almost certainly had to have occurred when a very observant hunter-gatherer noticed that a fruit bearing tree that had been nibbled too hard bore fruit of an immense size in comparison with the unnibbled tree. Or that is just the story I tell myself. Either way, it is my belief that pruning of fruit trees benefits us, but that benefit extends out further than to just us, it also benefits other plants, and animals as well, even fungus.
